At my school in Southampton we teach two GCSE history courses-

Top sets only are allowed to take-

AQA Modern World History
- International relations 1919-1963
- Germany 1919-39
- Russia 1917-41
- Britian in the First World War
Coursework
- Battle of Britain
- Evacuation & the home front in WWII

Year 11 mixed ability are taking-

AQA SHP
-Medicine
-American West
- Bloody Sunday coursework
- Portchester Castle coursework

Year 10 mixed ability will be taking -

Edexcel SHP
- Vietnam coursework
- American West
- Jack the Ripper Course work
- Medicine

We have been watching our SHP results decline over the last few years. When I did a survey as to why, I discovered a general apathy to the coursework which we do in year 11 and the Modern World pupils said it was hard fitting everything in. So last September we introduced a post 1945 modual into year 9 and it went down a storm. We also change exam boards for SHP. So our 2004 year 10's start Edexcel SHP. We now have over 140 pupils taking history of one kind or another.
The two SHP courseworks are entirely new and we are facing an OFSTED at the end of September - so any help or advice would be appreciated.

I teach Humanities at my school which involves a History unit on USA 1960-1991 alongside the RS and Geography units. Does anyone else teach a combined subject such as this?

Just for completion...

AQA SHP

Medicine
Germany
Conflict in Ireland
Medieval Southampton

It being a Catholic school, I have experienced some flak from HT about the Irish question. Who said history is dull?

OCR Modern World with Germany and USA coursework.

Chosen because it seems the easiest to get through and I am used to it from previous schools. Would like to do coursework on something a bit more exciting in the future - lots of good ideas from above posts.

From September I'll be teaching the AQA Modern World course, no coursework option. I'd be happy to hear from anyone else who does that option as its new to me!

We do AQA Modern World

Paper 1 - International Relations 1900-49
Paper 2 - Depth Studies on Germany and USA
Coursework - Evacuation and Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain

So far we've never struggled to fit it all in. Though I've heard many a rumour that OCR is easier?
But I inherited this, and enjoy it - I've now been an examiner for paper 1 for two years and found it really helpful. Happy to swap any resources!

Helen
