Can anyone suggest a workable program that coverts avi. files to DVD that would then be playable on a common or garden DVD player ?

The last program I used was 'ConvertXtoDVD' i believe, it can be downloaded from: http://www.vso-softw...nvert_x_to_dvd/

I would say though that it has been a long time since I used it, there could well be a better program released in the mean time. Also having had a quick butcher's it looks like 'Xilisoft AVI to DVD Converter' has some good reviews too, think it can be downloaded from cnet. Hope this helps!

I don't seem to be able to get the Xilisoft converter to work. It tells me that there isn't enough disc space in my C drive of the 'temporary file folder location' (?) but I don't know how to rectify this. Any ideas please ? I'm emptying my C drive at the moment - that may help.

Are you using the 'DVD Copy Express' function? In this case it will be trying to copy the contents of a dvd to your 'C' drive. Instructions for how to rip dvds to your hard drive can be found at: http://www.xilisoft....s/tutorial.html

To convert AVI to DVD you can follow: http://www.xilisoft....r/tutorial.html

Hope this helps, these programs are rarely easy to use I fear!

Went through the motions & the disk didn't play on the machine, despite it working on the computer. Anyone recommend another programme ?

The easiest and most sensible choice would be to buy a £20 Dvd/DivX compatible player from Asda or wherever and burn all your AVI and Divx files on to a DVD-R disk to play on it.

You can't make lossy files like AVI or MP3 into lossless files by burning them to DVD or CD.

My frustration is having loads of .mov files I've downloaded from IPlayer...is there any easy way I can play those on a TV (without having to have a mountain of cables / convert them one at a time to something more acceptable to my DVD player etc)?

What make / model TV is it? (I ask as I can just whack a USB in and play files on the TV - though I've not done it with a file in .mov format)

Would http://www.plexapp.com/ be of any use?

At home I have a Sony surround sound home theatre thingy, but its too old to have any computer connection. My frustration is that it is really easy to convert DVDs to AVI.files, then cut them & join them if necessary, but not so seemingly straightforward to turn AVI. files into playable DVDs, apart from the programmes so far suggested.
