Hi
I haven't got the dvd but I use clips from youtube - shortened versions of the programme "Days that shook the World" but enough for one lesson.
I have a powerpoint that may also be useful too - will post it when I can locate it - it may be on school lap top.

I bought the boxed set of these a couple of years ago. Although the 56 (!) programmes vary a lot in quality, overall it is one of the best purchases I have made for my department. I suspect that it can now be purchased fairly cheaply off Amazon if you have any money left in your budget. The best episodes (and most useful for History teaching) in my view are Franz Ferdinand, Murder of the Romanovs, Kristallnacht, Death of Hitler, Operation 'Valkyrie', Hiroshima, Moon Landing, Wright Brothers and Death of Princess Diana. As they last just on half an hour each (except the couple of hour-long 'specials' such as Six Day War and November 1918), they are also, dare I say, very useful fillers for odd lessons when colleagues are ill etc.
I think that FF was one of the episodes given away free in a national newspaper last year.

In memory of my boyhood hero Jim Clark (1936-1968): 'Chevalier Sans Peur et Sans Reproche'.

Terry, I'm sure that I recorded this from the History Channel last year. If you can wait until the postal strike is over (this week's strike anyway!), I can copy it for you on Saturday and post to you if you PM me your details.

You can buy individual discs (given away with newspapers) on Ebay for a couple of pounds.

I also agree is amazing. The assasinations of MLK and JFK superb, kids gripped even though they know the ending!!! Atom bomb is a bit long at 1 hour but 1st bit can be ignored easily. Ditto with fill in lessons for absent colleagues/ end of term. Every time I open the cover I notice a new one!

It should be said that there are several less good episodes of 'Days...'. In a few, the budgetary restrictions are very obvious with limited use of locations and a distinct shortage of actors, e.g. in the 'Captain Blood and the Crown Jewels' episode King Charles II seems be alone in his palace apart from one servant and the beefeaters who capture Captain Blood and his gang are never actually seen! The worst example of this is probably the Indian Independence episode. I know that you can't always hope to employ very good lookalikes for Historical figures but in this one the elderly, ailing Jinnah is played by a handsome young actor, the gaunt Nehru by a rather portly chap and Mountbatten by someone who doesn't appear to be able to act at all. Only the actor playing Gandhi is anything like convincing and this unfortunately detracts from what is actually a well-told story. There are similar problems with other episodes but overall it's a very good series and I've only started to notice some of the continuity errors etc after repeated viewings.
