Thought it might be a good idea to have a thread like this, for students and new teachers alike, that contains recommended reading from either ourselves, but more importantly senior history teachers. Books will be dotted around different threads, and having them all in one place makes it much easier for people. Suggested titles are:

I'll update the list as we get more books, putting the more popular books further up the list. Please feel free to suggest title amendments, or further titles, or whatever (we might get to the stage where we break up the General teaching books into motivation, discipline and so on).

Great Idea for a thread!

I'm going to start the ball rolling with a couple I've found really useful this year;:

Neil Smith's History Teachers Handbook, for specific history teaching, its a good introduction and comes with nice modern ideas for how to use ICT and a good set of websites.
Also Sue Cowley's Getting the Buggers To Behave is eminently readable and I've found to contain sound advice for those moments when you don't think you can face a particular class again...

Peter Fisher's Thinking Through History is excellent and even though it is quite old is still an invaluable start for more active teaching ideas.

Teaching History: A Reader by Hilary Bourdillon

Active History in Key Stages 3 and 4 by Farmer and Knight is a great book

Teacher's Toolkit: Raise Classroom Achievement with Strategies for Every Learner by Paul Ginnis

Enlivening Secondary History: 40 Practical Classroom Activities by Davies, Lynch and Davies.

Dave, that's great, I shall now attack ebay and abebooks and get hold of some of the books I should have brought months ago!

Also on a slightly more random note and whilst it is duplicating an entire section of this forum, is it also worth adding a list for teaching history websites; so that new teachers can find places to start looking for ideas if nothing else. If so the following would also make sense:

bump. I've been reading Doug Lemov's Teach Like a Champion and am thoroughly enjoying, and recommend, it. It outlines 49 ideas that Lemov has picked up through his own teaching and watching many other excellent teachers. Well worth a read.

thanks for posting your list Russel, could you possibly separate them into fact and fiction piles so I can sort them into the main list?

Russ' list ought to be easy enough to add to your sections without much hassle.

There's also a book in production by multiple authors, edited by ben Walsh, on ict in history. Ben also had a book on history using ict a few years ago, the name of which escapes me at the moment.
