I'm doing one of my PGCE projects on assessment, specifically on what pupils think of it (grades v. comment only marking). I was wondering what you thought?

You probably already know my views, but here's a few older threads to look through while other people give their views.
The key to the move towards comment only marking came from the research carried by Dylan Wiliam and Paul Black. Well worth getting hold of as a starting point
Quite a few pupil's still ask me if I'm 'marking' a piece of work, by which they mean 'can I have a number or letter grade'. I always explain WHY that won't be happening, and they generally accept that's a good idea, although I do sometimes wonder how much explaining goes on in other depts.
You might find there's a difference between KS3 and KS4, where we provide grades more often (although not anywhere as much as we did) and KS5 where essay feedback is often linked to the exam board mark scheme to try and mitigate the zero improvement figure reported by Black and Wiliam when grades were used. My feeling is we've got the balance about right, but I'm happy to be challenged.
