I will be looking into this. I do have an NQT co-ord, however she is also an assistant head, as is my HOD so I often have touble tying them down to talk about this sort of thing.

I think we should spend some time looking on the positives. Yes we are NQT's, yes we make mistakes and we are right to try and solve them but I challenge you (including those who just browse this part) to list 5 things that you did well today. I always do it after my year 10's on a friday because they're not the greatest but it reminds me that I can be a good teacher and that it's not all bad. We need to focus on what we do well becuase if we focus on the negatives we won't be teaching for long!!!



So, what are your 5 good things from this week/ today?

Thanks for that advice - I am an NQT who, because of timetable issues, only teaches two low ability KS3 history classes (I teach more geog. at KS3 and have more KS4 history). I often find it difficult to motivate and keep pupils on task - I'm greeted with ' I don't get it' in most lessons from a couple of pupils. Today's lesson was one of those which leaves me feeling like 'i don't get it'! Your advice has made me feel a little more positive about my abilities as I have identified 5 things that I did well!

Definitiely need to focus more on what I do well! I spend a lot of time in the classroom, when pupils give presentations, focussing on identifying three things each group did well and identifying one area for improvement - yet I rarely do this myself, instead focussing on the negative. A timely reminder from Gwendoline!

Perhaps a new "rule" for posting in this thread. For every negative there must be a positive! We need to start sharing things that went well in the classroom. I feel this is a challenge I should endeavour to meet!

I agree with Carl, if we are not careful it would be very easy to go down the path of "I can't do this" or is it me? Firstly there is not a teacher in the land (if we are honest) who have not thought at some time that they are not cut out for the job. Even in the lessons that we feel are going badly there are always points that can be extracted and built upon to become a "better" (I hate that word) teacher, as if you were 'crap' you wouldn't have made it through your PGCE or GTP. The whole point of NQT is that you are still finding your feet and it would be bazaar if you were a dab hand at it all. I've been a teacher for 15 years and yet I still have the odd lesson where it all goes to pot, sometimes it just isn't within your power to control it all.

The best thing to do is to take it on the chin and remember that sometimes you get the bear, other times the bear gets you.

Just remember not to take it personally!

I am now a fully qualified teacher with TLR responsibilities. Hopefully by this time next year I will be HOD of Humanities. Thank you to all that have supported me with resources and advice (particularly Roy Huggins) for ever indebted
