I'm trying to set up a Moodle site at http://www.learnhistory.org.uk and was wondering how others have gone about it. I had a bright student try it out today but he seemed baffled by it.

I can't seem to upload files like PowerPoints and Flash files - the activities just show 'Page cannot be displayed' stuff. :curse:

Apart from that I like the blocks.

I am a moodle addict!! I really really really love it! and my students have taken to it really well too. Ours is hosted by our college website so I don't know how yours works/ what your upload limits are etc.

Its a bit fiddly but once you have worked it out its well worth while. If you want to have a look at my site "in action" PM me and I'll give you my log in details so you can have a look.

Dafydd - it could be that your files are too large. By default Moodle (or rather the php that powers Moodle) only likes files smaller than 2MB. However, this is just a server setting and a quick word with your web hosts will be able to fix that.

Or that is at least the issue if you cannot upload files - are you able to upload the actual file and they just don't display properly? Check this by looking in the resources folder for each of your courses - are the files actually there?

Alternatively, you can always upload files the normal .ftp based way and then link to them. Use the 'add a link' option and just hyperlink to the resource.

I really like the little post-it note flash you have on the site. I was able to leave a little message ;)

I know about the PPT issue - apparently and bizarrely Moodle doesn't agree with PowerPoint 2003 onwards, but I installed Open Office and it still doesn't like .mht presentations either. It's a basic imageless presentation and lighter than 2MB. I'll try the FTP route, but that's a pain as I can only do that at home and not at work. Thanks for the invite Lou, will get onto that. I really want this Moodle to work, I can see the potential, just need to get past the teething stages.

Certainly not found any issue with uploading PowerPoints made with 2003 to Moodle - been doing that for over 2 years. I would consult your server people - it could be some permissions issue where the uploads folder isn't allowing uploads.

Incidentally, you're at the problem stage with Moodle. Once the server is setup and all is working, it works fantastically.

PS If you want to access your home PC from work, use http://www.logmein.com - the basic version is free and it is damn clever if a bit freaky using your home PC at school.

Cheers, I'll try that, and contact Carl, I set up with CSNewMedia instead of FatHosts.

At my school we are in the throes of examining a version of the MS Portal nonsense (likely cost 14k pa). We already have a VLE, which is adequate in most respects.

Comments about Moodle are finally beiong heard. The main issue with present VLE is e-portfolios (every child must have one by 2008, or so local mantra suggests). Can Moodle comply?

If you're still struggling over the weekend, message me though all peers (I'll be on most of the weekend) and I'll try and talk you through it.

You shouldn't need to ftp anything once it's set up, although you may need to 'tweak' a couple of settings, depending on whether you want the people viewing the site to be able to download the powerpoint, or view it from within moodle.

Ps - Site looks really good already Dafydd!

What are these?
Not sure we've got that requirement over here!
