At the Historical Association we are increasingly hearing concern from teachers regarding history in the secondary curriculum; concerns that are largely about Key Stage 3 and options at Key Stage 4 but that encompass other wider issues.

In order for us to effectively talk to government or to those bodies who represent senior management we need hard evidence not anecdotal evidence. To which end we wish to talk to our members and colleagues in schools. Geography is also facing the same issues and the Geographical Association are also canvassing their members.

Please take a few moments to complete this survey and enter the prize draw to win £75 of Amazon vouchers!

The questionnaire will be available until Friday 29 February and the results will be published in late spring.

Thank you for your time.

Rebecca Sullivan

CEO, The Historical Association

Get it filled in folks - we need some hard facts rather than educated guesses if we're going to be able to tackle the issues at Ministerial level etc.

Done but it is only aimed at subject leaders...not all might go on it
Bernard Woolley: Have the countries in alphabetical order? Oh no, we can't do that, we'd put Iraq next to Iran.

Bernard Woolley: That's one of those irregular verbs, isn't it? I give confidential security briefings. You leak. He has been charged under section 2a of the Official Secrets Act.

And some of the questions are terribly badly phrased.

These questions make no sense:
19. How many history lessons are taught per week?
1

2

3

4

5

6

6 or more
20. How many lessons a week are taught by non-specialists?

Some of the options also leave a bit to be desired - the assumption that at least 1 member of SLT has a History quaification...

NB: It's not aimed at just subject leaders, the last page of the survey is about how long you've taught for etc, and includes NQT.

I counted 18 questions that I couldn't answer due to the options available.

Only because thats the easiest way to get to every History teacher in the region!

Must say, I'm VERY disappointed with the questions asked and the options available. Lots of opportunities missed.... playing around with alternative questions to include in a variation of this survey, a few of which are included in this quick test.

I can only assume that the HA survey was compiled by adminisrative staff rather than anyone who woks in the education sector. I've e-mailed them to ask for a few changes to be made (ie - remove survey and start again....)
