Given the number of requests over the years on this forum for guides on how to create bite-size 'chunks' of digital video for use during lessons, I thought I'd create a quick guide:

A DVD-ripping guide for educators: Part 1

A DVD-ripping guide for educators: Part 2

May I suggest this become 'sticky' so we can direct people towards it? :)

Without wanting to sound like a complete idiot, would I follow this guide to copy clips of programmes that I've recorded onto my sky plus box and then copied from that to a DVD? Because that would be incredibly handy!

No - Doug's excellent guides show you how to get parts of films / documentaries from a DVD.

There is a great deal of interest in how to get recorded items from a Sky box / BT vision / etc. box though. These devices are basically a large harddrive that you can technically access but each device stores and encodes the data differently, making it difficult just to rip recordings directly. This isn't something I've tried. However, if you are keen to look into this for educational purposes - and it does get a bit technical - you need a device such as this: http://www.consolesa...ver-p-2119.html together with some software from the net. It basically becomes the modern equivalent of cassette dubbing (anyone remember that - playing a cassette at high speed whilst copying it?)

Thus, in short - it isn't an easy thing to pull content from a Sky / BT box :(

Hi Doug,
This link does not work. Can you help me out by posting it again. Also can you point me in the right direction for information on how to create podcasts?

Thanks

Ah yes... my apologies! I transferred all of the content from edte.ch to dougbelshaw.com as I'm doing something different with the former's URL now.

New links (which work!) are as follows:

A DVD-ripping guide for educators: Part 1

A DVD-ripping guide for educators: Part 2

Hi Guys,

Just downloaded and installed an amazing piece of software called Prism Video Converter.

It converts DVDs, flash video, Mpegs etc into any format that you want - including WMV or windows media play. Whats more its free! You simply put the DVD into your PC select DVD, change the output to WMV and click convert! It will also convert all You Tube etc flash video files whilst you are online.

I've played around with the settings in order to get the right quality sound and video. For example, I've changed the resolution to 2000 megs and the sound to the highest level possible. I'll most probably convert them to a lower resolution using windows moie maker a later date.

So to sum up, it converts everything that you can get on a CD Rom, DVD or teacher / You Tub eto a WMV or apple format so that you can download it to your laptop and us eit in the classroom. Finally, its free!

Kind Regards

I recently discovered DVD shrink 3.2 which converts your DVD movies into window movie maker compatible files. Its availsble form various download sites for free.
I found it to be the easiest one I have used, as I am not very technical.
I am also in the process of changng all my FLV files from you tube into WMV using you tube downlaoder, this has been great as the school network wont allow me to put on a FLV player.
