   Description
Causes of the Great War Interactive exploration by the Learning curve site (PRO).  Fantastic presentation, together with accessible text.  Pupils can click on many images to access source activities such as a quiz on the map of 1914 and work on the Schlieffen Plan to name only two.
The Great War Part of the EuroHist website, there is plenty of clear and useful information about the causes of the war.  Sections on 'Europe 1871-1914', with 'Causes' provide a fine summary.

The '-isms' that caused the war A Thinkquest site that explains how the First World War was caused by Imperialism, Militarism and Nationalism.  Very useful, especially when combined with the next site:

Why the war happened This site, part of the Anglia Campus material, provides information on all the major causes of WWI.  Good navigation together with splendid images.
Causes of World War I A clearly designed yet detailed site that investigates the main causes of WWI.  This site goes into useful depth about each cause, offering further links for additional information.
Outbreak of WWI From Spartacus, information about the individuals involved in the outbreak of the First World War.  Useful detail which is not available elsewhere.
Outbreak of War An online lesson that is of great use.  It clearly and simply goes over the causes of WWI providing links and explanations for all the different causes.
The day that sparked the war

The Black Hand Text heavy, but nevertheless interesting and useful information on the formation of the Black Hand, the group who 'sparked' WWI. Links to further relevant areas.
Summer 1914 From Trenches on the web, this page provides a summary of Summer 1914, and why Europe was on the brink of war.  Excellent detail with useful links back to the early 1800s.
Sarajevo, 28 June 1914 Detailed notes on the events of this most important day.  Splendid diagram of the Archduke's final journey - useful and clear!  Further links are provided.
