You can now create your own Hoop Shoot game using an easy to use online interface.  Try it!
To cut down on time wasters, password protection has been added to the interface.  You need to submit your e-mail address to obtain a password.  Privacy, of course, guaranteed.

Still lots more to add - apologies for the delays and thanks to all those who share their hard work.

New 'international' section added to Teachers' Forum.

A new section has been added to the extremely popular discussion forum, offering the opportunities to network with history teachers' around the world.
A large half-term update is in progress!

A large update is currently in process with new topics being added to all the current interactive games, new interactive diagrams, another huge resource upload together with further starter and plenary ideas.
Apologies for the trouble with downloads over the last weekend - the 'download counter' failed and was incorrectly fixed.  It is now expected this will work without problem.
A new game is also in development - and will be available very soon...

Teachers who wish to 'supervise' their own students in the forum are more than welcome.  Currently twelve teachers give up their own time to offer help and suggestions when possible.
Clear rules are enforced on the forum - that adhere to and go beyond current government guidelines.  See the forum for more.

26 Jan 03

Launch of the AS / A2 section - finally!

Something I've been trying to put together since the site launched two and a half years ago.  This largest single update of internet links since the site was launched. Three sections are now complete with the addition of 30 new topics:
Early Modern British History
Modern British History
Modern European History
The aim, as with the original aim of the site, is to offer suggested internet links for those teaching and learning the topics. Please send in any suggestions.  The two remaining areas will be completed as soon as possible and additional topic suggestions will most certainly be welcomed.
Visit the new section to see the range of topics covered - the following topics are available:

Developing out of the KS3 strategy, but also synonymous with effective teaching, these new pages offer ideas for effective lesson starters and plenaries.
The lesson starters page includes suggestions for 5-10 minute activities to create an active and positive learning atmosphere in the classroom.
The plenary (or lesson 'enders') page includes ideas and suggestions for 5-10 minute activities at the end of a lesson to reinforce and develop learning.
The emphasis here is on sharing good practice - please submit your own suggestions via the form on the bottom of each page or via the discussion forum.

New online lesson - 1066: the claims to the throne

One hour lesson that briefly introduces students to the claims to the throne in 1066 and then encourages them to plan their response as to who should be King.
www.schoolhistory.co.uk/1066
'Interactive diagrams' development

Saveable versions seem to be working well - so the format will be copied across to all of the existing diagrams.  Further sections are being created including Medieval Realms, Cold War and Medicine through Time.

05 Jan 03

Saveable version of interactive diagrams

I'm not 100% confident that it works yet, but it has been quite extensively tested.  As a trial, a Cold War diagram has been uploaded using the new format.
This allows users to work on a diagram, save their work and return to it later.  They must work on the same computer, but it is hoped this makes the diagrams more useful.
As with the 'create your own' launched yesterday, data is saved via simple text file cookies and deleted when a diagram is printed.

04 Jan 03

Create your own interactive diagrams

In the most complex piece of Flash coding I've ever attempted, you can now use an online interface to create your own interactive diagrams.  What took hours, now takes minutes.
Work can be saved using Flash MX 'shared Objects' - small text files which are stored on your computer.
When you have completed your diagram the data is automatically sent via the webpage to SchoolHistory.co.uk, and can be quickly turned into new diagrams.
Redevelopment of the 'interactive diagrams'

New easy to remember url:

www.schoolhistory.co.uk/diagrams

Whole section being redeveloped to accommodate an update to the diagrams and the new create your own.  I plan to add more of these including customised versions (developing ideas used in the recent Native Americans lesson)
Brief explanation of the different uses and benefits of the diagrams added.
The aim is to create sections for specific topics developing the existing three areas.  Anyone willing to help with this is more than welcome.  Let us know.

17 Dec 02

Updated version of Elizabeth I conclusions lesson

Following its use in class, and observations of other teachers using the lesson, I've made a couple of changes.
The main task now opens in a separate pop-up window without 'back' buttons.  This will prevent the problem of students clicking 'back' on their browser and losing all their work!
When reaching the conclusion, students now have to place the scales in the most appropriate position - this gives them a starter for their conclusion.

Interactive wordsearches redesigned

The Interactive java based wordsearches have been improved - clearer page design allows students easy access.  These activities have been given a new 'lease of life' in the light of the KS3 strategy.  If you are running an ICT-based history lesson, using one of these wordsearches is an ideal starter activity - getting students working quickly, encouraging them to think, before moving onto your main activity.
In addition they are ideal to grab students' focus immediately, especially while you are sorting out network and log-on issues for other students.
Suggested links to follow on from the wordsearches have also been updated and improved.  Built in differentiation!

There are now 579 freely downloadable resources available - all kindly submitted by other teachers.
Do you have anything to offer?

Last week there were 35,049 .pdf worksheet downloads and 2,808 PowerPoint downloads.
The time and effort put in by the teachers who submit their resources, as well as the fact that they make no attempt to exert copyright over their resources is a great example of the collaborative ethos that is at the core of successful education. As well as this, the time and resources spent by SchoolHistory.co.uk in managing the site cost its users nothing.
The only 'payment' we ask is that you send in any resources you have created to add to the site so others can also benefit.
Think about submitting your resources.

Another great case study - this time from Mr Drew from Passmores School.  He explains about his first week using a digital projector in the classroom, together with his excellent department website.

15 Sep 02

New case studies - Miss Boughey and Mr Huggins

The PowerPoint case studies have been very popular, so the concept is being extended to a new 'case studies section'.  This isn't quite ready yet - but two new case studies are!
Miss Boughey writes about her Hip Historians, explaining how a local history project has been hugely successful.  Soon to be featured on the History Channel.
Mr Huggins writes about the virtual tour of Conisbrough castle, explaining how he encouraged gifted and talented pupils to use digital video and PowerPoint. Potentially a BECTa award winner!
Minor updates

I knew the site was popular, but I was surprised - since September 1st there have been about 2,500 resource downloads a day!  I'm currently updating the KS4 download tracking.
Dynamic information added to the left hand side bar.  Using the tracking information you are now told how many people are currently using the site.
'Coming soon' page added to the games section to keep you updated.  Explains about games currently in development which will be finished as soon as possible!
Major updates (as mentioned below) still in progress - more information soon.
Multiversum - Elizabeth I

As mentioned in the an article I wrote for the TES Teacher magazine, the website my Year 8s created for Elizabeth I is now online.  The 'background' section may be of interest.
The site isn't completely finished as the timeline needs to be updated - they will finish this in the next few weeks.

03 Sep 02

Updates still in progress

55 brand new downloadable resources added - sincere thanks to all those who contributed.  I have been sent in lots more resources, but many have infringed (mostly unintentionally) on copyright so great care has been taken.  New © copyright guidance is being prepared.
The new forum - a huge success, already extremely popular with users.  Try it out.
A great deal of work has gone on 'behind the scenes' in the last month.  The site is now far more dynamic and can be updated quickly and easily.  As the site has grown, it became far more difficult to administer.  Pages can now be updated from any web server when required.
Download tracking started - visual record of how many resources are downloaded - KS3 is fully complete.  Underneath each resource a counter tracks how many people download it.
Further quiz and game creation aids are soon to be launched.  Users will be able to create their own drag n' drop exercises, Historical Duckshoot games and Penalty Shootout games.
Following feedback from the SchoolHistory survey undertaken over the summer, I have tried to make navigation through the site easier.  Slight redesign of the home page and yeargroups pages is the result. If I get feedback on issues, I can fix them, so please report anything you feel should be improved!

07 Aug 02

Entire site transferred to new server

The site is now hosted on faster and more advanced webspace.  Hopefully improvements can already be seen.
The site will continue to develop over the next month taking advantage of more advanced functionality.
Overhaul and update in progress

Extensive checking and updating of dead links to external sites is in progress.  Out of 1000+ links, many now need updating.
Out of date areas being improved and developed.  Some internal links to be fully updated.
Vast update of resources in progress - thanks to all those who continue to submit.
New version of penalty shootout in testing - currently file size is too large for release.
Development of match-up quizzes section using updated and more intuitive version.
SchoolHistory.co.uk survey

Please continue to fill in your comments and ideas - they are already being put into practice - e.g. PowerPoint guidance section is in development!
