The contendors for the throne in 1066

At the beginning of 1066, there were reports of a star in the sky.
This was seen as a bad omen - a sign that England could expect troubled times.

On January 5th 1066, the King of England, Edward the Confessor died.  He was 61 years old.
He had no children, and it was not clear who would be King.

Many people claimed that Edward (shown above) had promised that they would become King. When succession was not clear, it was up to the Witan (the council of leading nobles) to decide who should be King next.
