Aims: Through the use of ICT, allow pupils to investigate the events surrounding the murder of Thomas Becket, empathise with Henry II, interpret the outcome of different actions and learn what actually happened.

Equipment / Resources: Suite of Internet connected computers, around one per two pupils.  Website address: www.schoolhistory.co.uk. Copies of worksheet as extension work for those who finish.  Pupils require books and writing equipment.

Lesson Development
Time: Introduction:

10 Register, settle class.  Go over rules for computer room.
Explain today's task: examining Henry II's decisions about his close friend Becket.
Activities:

5 Pupils log onto computer system following school guidelines, following directions to locate Becket activity.  Wait until whole class have found the introduction screen.  Instruct pupils to write down their highest 'responsibility points'.
20 Pupils use the online activity to explore, investigate and learn about Henry II and Thomas Becket.  Will involve making mistakes, but following on screen instructions, pupils can start again to try different options.
5 Pause and share ideas / experiences.  After time to explore the program, encourage class to share their scores as well as their best and worst decisions!
10 Following class feedback pupils should try exercise again to see if they can improve on their and class scores.  If pupils have finished, extension worksheet can be handed out, or pupils can be instructed to investigate the Becket links (using link from the exercise).
Conclusion:

10 Complete ICT work, log off computers following school policy.  Ensure all pupils have a copy of the worksheet.  Briefly recap Henry's difficulties and eventual outcome.  Ask whether anyone managed to end up with a positive reputation (impossible without cheating!).  Set homework, pack up and dismiss.

Differentiation: Special Needs:
By task using ICT activity, extension activity also available.
Assessment: Homework / Continuation:
Pupil own by recording 'responsibility points', teacher by class discussion / questioning and marking of completed homework. Using knowledge from the lesson, complete questions neatly in exercise books and learn the major events for a quick quiz for next lesson.
