Aims: Pupil led discovery of the Norman Conquest.  Through the use of ICT and the Internet, pupils interpret the importance of events during 1066.  Lesson allows independent pupil investigation.  

Equipment / Resources: Suite of Internet connected computers, around one per two pupils.  Website address: www.schoolhistory.co.uk. Introductory screen (objectives) leads to a separate site: www.normanconquest.co.uk.  Can equally be used as a starting place depending on teacher preference.  Extensive resources for the site available from here.

Lesson Development
Time: Introduction:

10 Register, settle class.  Go over rules for computer room.
Explain today's task: Examining the events of 1066 using ICT.  Pupils in control, they decide what to investigate.
Activities:

5 Pupils log onto computer system following school guidelines, following directions to work through lesson objectives and locate the start page.
20 Set 20 minutes to explore the site - can go anywhere on the site, but cannot leave it.  If using the worksheets, these provide questions to answer.
5 Pause and share ideas / experiences.  Assess what pupils have learned about 1066 - what happened?  What was the major problem?
10 Return to independent pupil work.  As pupils finish the initial part, they should attempt the quiz to test their knowledge and understanding of the material.
Conclusion:

10 Complete ICT work, log off computers following school policy.  Discuss what pupils have learned today - what can they remember?  Set h/w as appropriate Pack up and dismiss.

Differentiation: Special Needs:
By task using ICT activity, extension activity also available.  Pupils are empowered to explore areas in depth as they deem suitable.
Assessment: Homework / Continuation:
Teacher by class discussion / questioning.  Quiz at the end of the lesson.  Marking of completed h/w. The lesson leads well towards an account of 1066.  Depending on other work already complete, a written task would be appropriate.
