Aims: Through the use of ICT, pupils should investigate the creation of the Union Flag, the background events and the Acts of Union.  Once completed, pupils can then research for further information.  The lesson prepares pupils to create a guide on 'The Making of the UK & the Union Flag'.

Equipment / Resources: Suite of Internet connected computers, around one per two pupils.  Website address: www.schoolhistory.co.uk. Copies of the worksheet are required for pupils to fill in as they take the lesson.  Pupils require books and writing equipment.

Lesson Development
Time: Introduction:

10 Register, settle class.  Go over rules for computer room.
Explain today's task: investigate the creation of our national flag, and learn what the flag represents.  Get pupils to log onto computer network and access the correct online lesson. Go through on screen lesson objectives.  Explain that the exercise will provide pupils with information to create a booklet for h/w. 
Activities:

5 Recap lesson objectives, distribute worksheets and instruct pupils to fill in the answers as the take the lesson.  Remind pupils that if they can't find an answer, go onto the next page.
20 Pupils use the online activity to explore, investigate and learn about the creation of the Union Flag.  Pupils will be directed to the assessment quiz at the end of the exercise.
5 Stop class and go thorough answers from the worksheets.  Find out how many managed to get 100% in the quiz.  Explain and set h/w: create a booklet on 'The Making of the UK & Union Flag'.  Pupils can then spend the remainder of the lesson finding out further information or going over material they are unsure of. 
10 Allow pupils to follow the Acts of Union internet links (following link at the end of the quiz) or recap the online lesson and direct pupils to make notes to help them with their homework.
Conclusion:

10 Complete ICT work, log off computers following school policy.  Recap information from the lesson with short Q&A session. Ensure all understand homework, pack up and dismiss.

Differentiation: Special Needs:
By task using ICT activity.  Pupils who finish quickly can go on to use the internet links to research further information.
Assessment: Homework / Continuation:
Quiz at the end of the online lesson provide feedback to the pupils of their own knowledge & understanding.  Marking of completed homework. Using notes from the lesson, create a booklet entitled 'Making of the UK & the Union Flag'.  This needs to describe the creation of the Union flag using illustrations and explanations.
