Elizabeth I

How successfully did she tackle to problems of her reign?

Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn.  During her reign she faced religious, marriage, dynastic and foreign policy problems.

Religion was central to 16th Century life.  People were expected to follow the state religion.  Henry VIII established the church of England through his divorce.

The divorce and break from Rome:

Made a male heir possible

Provided money from monasteries.

Forced people to be loyal to the crown.

Gave Henry control of the church.

The Reformation swept though Europe, and caused repeated religious change in England.  Edward IV remained Protestant, but England became Catholic under Mary.

Elizabeth wanted to bring this trouble to an end.  She looked for a compromise and this became known as the 'Elizabethan Settlement'.

Elizabeth faced difficulties with those who would not accept - the Catholic threat and the Puritan threat.

Threat from Mary Queen of Scots:

Cousin of Elizabeth - claim to throne.

Religious threat - strong Catholic

Could provide focus for rebellion.

Foreign support from France & Spain

Mary imprisoned.  During next 19 years Elizabeth's officials discovered several Catholic plots trying to make Mary Queen.

In 1587, a plot organised by Babington was discovered.  A letter was found suggesting Mary was involved.  She was tried, found guilty and sentenced to death.
