The Norman Conquest of 1066

King Edward the Confessor died in January 1066, leaving nobody to become King.

Three claimants to the Throne:

Harold Godwinson
Harold Hardrada
William Duke of Normandy

Harold Godwinson became King.  The other claimants objected and prepared to invade.

Harold Hardrada (Viking) invaded first.  He landed near York.  Harold Godwinson marched north to meet him.

Harold Godwinson won a fantastic victory at the Battle of Stamford Bridge (25 September 1066).

Meanwhile, Duke William landed in the south.  King Harold heard this, and marched south at top speed.  They met on a hill near to Hastings.

14th October 1066.  The Normans contstantly attacked the Saxon shield wall.  Fierce fighting on both sides.

The two sides battled viciously, but the Normans managed to break the shield wall.  King Harold was killed, and Duke William victorious.

Duke William cautiously marched on London, where he was crowned King of England on Christmas Day 1066.

King William viciously took control of England building by Castles. He dealt with resistance harshly.

William the Conqueror died in 1087 just as his great survey, the Domesday Book, was being completed.
