We have just started a unit in my senior school, on Ancient Rome, and I'm a tad worried  It covers a large timeline, and many timelines of Ancient Rome (Beginning at the fall of Tarquin the Proud (Etruscan)) are very detailed.

I was wondering if anybody knew some fairly good sites or reading that could help me get the basics so I know what the teachers talking about all these latin-named Romans....

N.B: I come from an Australian school, so I'm not sure if the UK studies Ancient Rome in Senior school?

Hello and Welcome!

No. We don't study Ancient Rome in senior school here in the UK ..... well not unless you are taking Classical Civilisation or studying Latin and Ancient History at age !6+ which not many people do.

However this is something studied in American Schools (though maybe younger than I assume you are?) and there are some good American sites which I think should help.

See here:
Timeline: Ancient Rome
Rome Resources - a portal to lots of categorised links

I'm not too sure whether you want a sort of 'potted history of the Roman Empire' or whether you want information on various aspects of Roman Life.

Post again and I can probably be a bit more helpful.

I looked at both of the links, and had a skim read of the information they had to offer. Both sites were excellent, and gave me some very good background information to start understanding ancient Rome.

Using some of the links, and doing some web surfing, I found it easier to wade through the information it had to offer, and can understand what our teacher is going on about in class; which is always a good thing!

Thank you very much for the help :)
