Welcome to the Forum.

If you want other students to discuss various aspects of trench Warfare with you I think it might be a good idea if you stated some views of your own first. Why not start the ball rolling with your views about just one of the aspects you mention?

We do actually have a section for Student Discussion so I have moved your post there.

Sorry, but apart from your question about the Enfield rifle, these are not really questions for discussion, are they? For example asking what rifle the Germans used is just asking for factual information.

If you want people to discuss things with you, you need to put forward some opinions of your own first - and to support what you say by using some actual evidence.

Don't forget that the best way of making your point is to clearly explain why you think that. You always need to back your ideas up with evidence!

Trench warfare was first, to my knowledge adopted by Louis XIV, Vuaban (I forget spelling of name) to be more precise. It was a safer way to siege cities and 17th century fortifications. They would dig trenches towards the city/fort and position mortars to fire into the defenders position.

Then you get to World War One, in the meantime you have the development of more accurate rifles so trench warfare became more widely used. The main German plan, the Schlieffen plan was created in the 1890’s to address Germanys position of “in the middle” France on one side and Russia on the other. It mapped out how to win a war with France then turn and defeat Russia. The Germans logistically fail to achieve their full aims of the Schlieffen plan which was to capture Paris. They were pushed back (battle of the Marne) to the Noyon-Verdun line. Then of course the race to the sea to capture the sea ports which are important for supplying men down the line.
The Germans occupy a fairly large chunk of France, they don’t need to go anywhere and are on the defensive. These ambitions are evident in the Hindenburg line, which was a second line of fortifications, constructed with concrete. Stalemate begins with neither side being pushed back enough to break the deadlock.

It is interesting that the first major European war since the Napoleonic wars becomes one that does not matter as much on manpower than it does on economic power. Which states could keep up the supplying of food/guns/munitions/materials to the front, and Britain-France end up winning the economic war of trench warfare.

But what do I know? I am a 18th century historian!
