If the problem is writing a well structured answer to a question, rather than knowing and understanding the relevant information then you need to:

Make a plan before you start writing

For a question asking "Why ........?" you will presumably come up with a list of basic reasons:
* because ...... (reason 1)
* because .......(reason 2)
* because ..... .(reason 3) etc.

Now try to put your list into a logical order so that there is a link from one reason to the next Or put your list into what you think is the order of importance (most important first/least important last)

Next write an introductory paragraph which briefly explains what you intend to show in your essay (eg that the British were very concerned about the impact of German bombing raids on major cities and on the damage that would occur not just to buildings but also to civilian morale and safety - particularly of children (think about why children were seen as being so important to save from attack)

Then take each reason from your list in turn and write a paragraph about each one. Explain as clearly as you can how what you are writing about helps you to answer the question. If you have put your list into an order of importance actually say things like "The most important reason was ..... because ....."

Finally when you have dealt with each reason write a conclusion which sums up the main points you have made. Maybe you could also point out that the policy of evacuating children was not entirely successsful too.

The key to writing a good essay is to link everything you say clearly and directly to the question you have been asked and to explain the points you make rather than writing lots of long-winded descriptive detail.

Good Luck and do post again if you still don't understand. However, we are not going to do the work for you B)

Is this a coursework essay?

Causation or ‘why’ questions
How to answer a ‘why’ or causation question:

For causation questions you need to explain why, not describe how, something happened. So don’t just tell the story. Structure your answer by making a plan and dividing the causes into short, medium or long term, or more or less important ones.

Divide the causes/reasons into longer and shorter-term ones, and develop each point into a paragraph.

For causation questions always make a plan. Don’t just describe what happened, explain why it happened. Summarise in an opening paragraph or concluding paragraph.

Identify several different causes or factors. If possible, set these out according to a time-scale (long, medium and short term). Show which you think are more important and which are less important.

Planning your essay:
An essay is:
· Extended writing.
· Organised so as to answer the question. Hence the need for a plan.

Three tips to help you form a plan:
· Make a list. Very few historical events had only one cause. You will get yourself above the ‘ground floor’ of marks at once if you can present several reasons.
· Think of a logical pattern for your list; it shouldn’t be just one thing after another. Often ‘why’ questions divide into long-term/short-term causes. Another possible distinction is more important causes. When you have done this, number the items on your list – it is unlikely that the final essay will deal with items in the order you first thought of.
· Make up your mind what you think about the whole question. Be ready to make comments to support your general view as you write the essay, both in an opening statement, and as comments on the items on the list/plan as you go through it.

another way to look at a question is to dismantle it

Analysis by part: The wording of the questions.
To dismantle the question further look for the other parts:
1. The instruction part
2. The main topic
3. Key factor, phrase or words.

1. Why did the British Government decide to evacuate children from Britain’s major cities in the early years of the Second World War?

QT (Question Type)
Explanation ‘Why did…’

QP (Question Parts)
Instruction (I) ‘Why did…’

Main Topic (MT) British Government.
Evacuated children
Britain’s major cities
Early years (time)
Second World War

Key Phrase/word (KP/W) decide

Emma,
I assume you want links to information about evacuation - though you could have made your request a lot clearer ;)

There is good, basic information here on the Spartacus web site

and also on this page of the History Learning Site

If you need more detailed information, then do post again.

Our Forum Rules (see the top of the page) state:

Quote

This is a 'history help' forum - not a 'We'll do your work for you' forum.
Do NOT post specific requests for help in completing your GCSE coursework.  This may be considered cheating.  Check with your teacher first.
We are more than happy to help with suggestions, but you must do your own work.

However, your request is perfectly all right and we can certainly suggest sites where you might find what you are looking for:

Evacuation - on the Spartacus site.
Evacuation - from History Learning site.
and especially this government leaflet published at the time.
Evacuation - JohnDClare's site. Also on the top right of that page there are links to other relevant websites. Some of these I have already given, but others may be useful.

Finally ..... try this detailed article about evacuation on the BBC site

I hope these help, but you will need to read the info. given carefully. I have been unable to find anything which just gives 'Reasons for Evacuation' in the way you might like.

If you need more help then do post again, but remember what I said at the top of this message about our policy on Coursework questions.

You must consult your teacher with coursework matters. They are the only who know what help and assistance you are allowed.

If you are completely stuck I would suggest writing some notes about each source and then taking these to your teacher before your next lesson.

The advice Mr Field gives is very good:

Make notes on each source....Annotate each source.

If it is a comparison question.......use your English GCSE skills in comparing information to get you started.

Comment on how/why sources are similar or different.

Ask your teacher when you get back to school.
