hey, i need to find quotes made by historians [well known or otherwise, as long as they've published something] pertaining to elan vitale, trench warfare, unrestricted submarine warfare, artillery, attrition and defence in depth.

i've had to do an essay on the evolution of tactics and technology through ww1, but have been bedbound so i can't get down to my local library and, sadly, have no-one to do it for me. i'm having real trouble finding things like this on the web, so, yeah.. anything would be a great help.

also, i've writen about 2000 words based on notes taken in class and some of the text books i have, so, if this would be helpful, ask and i'll post it/some of it.

please and thankyou

Just had a quick look and this may be a starting point:http://www.pbs.org/greatwar/

It has historian's views on different aspects of the war. Maybe there is something useful there. I'll have another look...

Just in case anyone looks up this post hoping to find books about quotes from soldiers etc. from the time of the First World War, here are a few ideas.

In 2002, the historian Max Arthur published 'Forgotten Voices of the Great War: A New History of WWI in the Words of the Men and Women Who Were There'. This book was based on the archives of the Imperial War Museum, is available in paperback and should be easily available from your public library. However, there are lots of other historians who have published collections of writings and sayings of men and women who experienced the First World War at first-hand. They include Martin Middlebrook, Peter Liddle and Lyn Macdonald.

For students looking for recent historians on the First World War, my best advice would be to do a book search on Amazon or a similar site. There are a lot of books out there so any list of historians could include only a few. Names to look out for (as well as the ones above) include: Hew Strachan, Richard Holmes, Gary Sheffield and Peter Barton. Amazon lists other similar books which would give further ideas.

I should also have added that the excellent Spartacus Schoolnet website is very good for primary source quotes. The index to the First World War section is here.
