If you've been absent from school you just need to get in contact with your teacher and request a copy of the notes!

You can find out some details about the Strategic Defence Initiative at:
http://www.cnn.com/S...ar/episodes/22/
http://www.bergen.or...r/Arms/sdi.html

... yet these don't really go into too much detail. If you read those, the answers to your questions should become straightforward though. What could 'zero option' really mean? Why would missiles be needed in Europe? The 'strategic initiative' is another concept really - try to think about who gained the strategic initiative even just by dreaming up this plan....

It defeated Russia, because Gorbachev realised that Russia could NEVER afford its own SDI (ie America WON the arms race, simply by deciding to pay for something so hugely expensive that it would bankrupt the USSR).
Thereaft, Grbachev worked for detente, and his marked the end of the Cold War and the start of the collpase of Russia.
