Helsinki Accord

I am learing about the Helsinki Accord I know its three parts but how was the Helsinki Accord important to USA and USSR? :wacko:

It was important as it was a part of Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik which improved relations between the East and West. Helsinki was only one aspect but it was quite important as it allowed for the recognition of the USSR's empire. As to who gained the most, in the short term it was the USSR due to increased scientific/economic help and the recognition of the division of Eastern Europe as legitimate. In the medium to long term, some believe it to be the factor which encouraged decline in the Soviet sphere of influence. The provision for human rights allowed criticism within communist countries (Charter 77 in Czechoslovakia) and outside them.
