Hello, I'm from Poland and I'm writing an essay about the Antonine Wall (I don't know if 'essay' is a correct term because this work is an ending work on my historical studies). I'm quite interested in its history but I have a big problem with materials, books and articles connected with Antonine Wall. There is a chance that this essay will be published and in the effect will popularize the history of Roman Britain in my country. I must add that history of the Antonine Wall is nearly unknown in Poland, it is quite exotic theme anyway. I would like to ask you for some publications about the Antonine Wall. Especially I need following books and articles:

1. Breeze D. J., The abandonment of the Antonine Wall: its date and implications. Scottish Archaeological Forum 7 (1976). The article is probably on pages 67-80.

2. Gilliam J. P., Possible changes in plan in the course of the construction of the Antonine Wall, Scottish Archaeological Forum, 7 (1976).

3. Hanson W. S. and Maxwell G. S., Rome's North West Frontier: The Antonine Wall, Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh 1983.

4. Shotter David, The Roman Frontier in Britain, Hadrian’s Wall, the Antonine Wall and Roman Policy in the North, 1996.

I must add that it is really too expensive for me as a Polish to buy those books (some of them are not even available I suppose, for example the Scottish Arch. Forum) but on the other hand I really need them so if you could make an xerox copy of them or maybe a scan for me I would by very very very happy and grateful. Please help me. Best wishes from Poland !!!

I don't know whether any of our members or teachers will have these books, Lukasz, but I'm happy to post your appeal in case someone can help.

The Scottish Arch. Forum seems to be in the Durham University Librar, of which I am a member, so I'll have a look for you next time I go.

You can get the Shotter book quite cheaply from amazon.

Don't get your hopes up for the Hanson and Mwell book - could your local library get it for you on an inter-library loan?

Thank you very very much dear MrJohnDClare for being ready to help me. When I'll be in my local library I'll ask them about these books and about costs of sending them, maybe it will be possible to get them in this way. Thank you also very much for the link to the amazon books, if it will be impossible to get the Shotter book I'll try to buy it, anyway it isn't too expensive which means I can afford for it but I'm afraid that with the costs of sending it to Poland the price may be bit too high for my wallet anyway. I'll be very grateful for the articles from Scottish Arch. Forum.

Best wishes
Łukasz

P.S. I have found this book available online, maybe this electronic version of the basic study about the Antonine Wall will help somebody:

Lukasz
Hi!
My local University Library DID have the two articles you wanted.
I have scanned them and posted them on this webpage - http://www.greenfiel....sch.uk/Ant.htm
There were 18 pages and to save time I've just posted them as jpeg files - just click on the clicks and you'll get the pages.

Hope this helps.
Best of luck with the essay!

Thank you very much one more time dear MrJohnDClare for the scans, especially the article about abandonment of the Antonine Wall should very helpful. As we know there are some problems with this date and the wall have been abandoned few times, I had a quick look on this article and it looks quite interesting. I have one more question: could you MrJohnDClare tell me what do you think about this book? ---> book

It's very fresh study about the Roman north frontier in Britain but I don't know nothing about the authors (I haven't seen their other books). As we can read in the review the book looks to be a study of of the 'pre - Antonine Wall' period in the history of Roman Britain. Had any teacher have contact with this book? What it is about? May it be helpful in my work or rather I should forget about it?

Thank you one more time for help with the Scottish Arch. Forum!

Best wishes!

Hello

I'm nearly ending my essay but I have one more request. I need a title and author of the article from the Journal of Roman Studies xlvii, 1957, the article was on pp.229-30. I have a problem because I can't find it and I need to mention it in my work. The article was about altar from the Carriden, it was discovered at 1956 and thanks the inscription on it we could recognize the Roman name of this fort - Veluniate. If anybody could help my I would be very very grateful.

Best wishes

Lukasz

Hello

I have one more request. I need a titles and authors of the following articles:

Journal of Roman Studies xl (1950), pp. 93 - 94

Journal of Roman Studies xlv (1955), p. 123

Journal of Roman Studies xliv (1954), p. 86

I couldn't find them on-line. The pages mentioned are not the beginning pages of the articles (for example: JRS xlv (1955), p. 123 may be found, for example, on the pages 119 - 125). I hope that you understand what I mean.

Thank you one more time and of course I wish everybody Merry Christmas! :)

Lukasz

Hi Lukasz - Merry Christmas to you too.

I went through to my local Universoty Library today, noly to find that - despite that fact that the website said it was open - it was closed!
So no luck.
It's closed now until the New Year.

I will go through and get the info you need then.
In case I forget over Christmas, perhs you could remind me a few days into the New Year?
Thanks
JCL

I would like to invite everybody! I'm still working about my essay (maybe a publication I hope) and I have one more request. I have to take a look on a following article:

R. N. L. Barber, A Roman Altar from Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Glasgow Archaeological Journal 2, 1971, 117 - 119.

If somebody could help me with it I'd be grateful.

Thank you once more!
Best regards,
Lukasz
