Student Movement Help America A Divided Union

Hi im writing an essay the question is. To what extent was America a divided union by 1980 (15) I have written a little bit about the student movement along with ww2, martin luther king and McCarthy but im confused about how the student movement helped to divide america. Also the i have the same problem but with the womens movement. Any help will be gladly appreiciated. :)

Name one time in American history where the people were not a "divided union". Good luck finding one.
