If by 'The Blitz' you are just referring to the aerial bombardment of London September 7, 1940 - May 1941
Then according to one source:
Quote
The Blitz killed over 41,000 Londoners, injured over 49,000, and destroyed 46,000 dwellings.
However this is all a bit tricky for two reasons:
- Different sites give different figures
- Some people refer to the German aerial bombardment of all British cities between September 1940 and May 1941 as 'The Blitz' and others just mean London.
I know you didn't ask for a general website on the Blitz but
this one is good and is produced by a British History teacher - and likely to be reliable.
He gives a figure of
Quote
By May 1941, 43,000 had been killed across Britain and 1.4 million had been made homeless.
So .... what's a poor Year 9 student to do?
* First check your worksheet to see whether you can figure out whether your topic is just about London or whether it's about the country as a whole.
* Then make it clear in your answer that the figures given do vary according to which source you use.
OK?
