Thankyou for the answers to my previous posts. I have [yet again] another question requiring a rather complexe answer. Heh... I have done quite a bit of research on the Blitz and studied it in class. Does anyone know any websites where I can find FUTHER information?
One of the questions is:
"Why were the major cities of Britain bombed by the Germans in 1940-41?"
It has to be written in approximately 500 words. Eep. Not very much lee-way there...
I'm looking to bring something extra into my answer. Any EXTRA ideas?

xxxxxx

OK. This is an interesting question, and one that has much significance to World War II.

I'd research the answer by using the following sites. You need to find out why the bombing switched from the airfields to the cities. It is commonly felt that if airfields had continued to be bombed then Britain would have found it much harder, if not impossible to win the battle.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/in...tain/page01.stm (3rd and 4th pages most useful to you)
http://www.centennialofflight.gov/essay/Ai...ritain/AP22.htm
http://www.raf.mod.u...940/phase2.html

However, I'd suspect most of this information won't be new to you - as you've studied it in class you'll already have covered these key points. Do remember you aren't meant to post specific coursework questions on this forum

As I'm sure you know, this is known as the Home Front.

The National Archives have a excellent section on the Home Front at:
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/homefront/

Specifically www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/education/homefront/bombing/

I have moved your message so that it doesn't get muddled up in a thread about Schindler's List.

Here is a site that will help with your research.
The Blitz and World War II

That should give you a start and then if you have any specific questions you can post again.

If by 'The Blitz' you are just referring to the aerial bombardment of London September 7, 1940 - May 1941

Then according to one source:

Quote

The Blitz killed over 41,000 Londoners, injured over 49,000, and destroyed 46,000 dwellings.

However this is all a bit tricky for two reasons:
  • Different sites give different figures

  • Some people refer to the German aerial bombardment of all British cities between September 1940 and May 1941 as 'The Blitz' and others just mean London.

I know you didn't ask for a general website on the Blitz but this one is good and is produced by a British History teacher - and likely to be reliable.

He gives a figure of

Quote

By May 1941, 43,000 had been killed across Britain and 1.4 million had been made homeless.

So .... what's a poor Year 9 student to do?
* First check your worksheet to see whether you can figure out whether your topic is just about London or whether it's about the country as a whole.
* Then make it clear in your answer that the figures given do vary according to which source you use.

OK?

I think the answer is 23.

See this Timeline about the Blitz and London.

There are lots of facts and figures there and if you add up the numbers of hospitals it mentions being bombed on separate occasions 23 is the answer you get.

Check for yourself B).

Of course, there may have been other hospitals which this site doesn't mention. I'm afraid i don't know if their figures are 100% accurate.
