I wondered if anyone could recommend some good revision material on the above topic as we have had limited teaching time on the subject and my textbook doesn't contain much info thanks in advance

I would look at http://condensedchina.com, skip down and click on Republican China. Even though it says its condensed, it should be more than adequately detailed for your purposes.
Essentially you're looking at the period of Chinese history that started with the fall of the ancient Imperial system and the creation of the Republican system by the Nationalists like Sun Yatsen. Then eventually the communists gain influence, the nation is thrown into turmoil and eventually the communists have control of the nation. Your time frame ends with the death of Mao Zedong, the first communist leader.
I've found this site to also be an accurate synopsis with a bit more detail and a nice outline of Chinese history.
