Hello, i am doing a history assignment and the topic is Who discovered Australia. I am not asking for answers, i only wish for you to read my post and confirm to me that this is true.
I think that the Australian Aborigionals where the first discoverers of Australia. the other 4 main factors are: Spain, Portrugal, England and the Dutch (Netherlands). The Portraguese (please excuse my spelling, it is horrible!) and the spanish had a teaty with the Pope at the time, and at that time Portragul and Spain where the two main powers, much like Russia and America are today. They thought they where the the center of the world. then the pope said you can have this half, and you can have this half. At the time they hadn't discovered the Americas or as they called it "The New World". So spain set out onto their half to seee what they got/to find new land. And indeed they succeeded! they found the Americas. Then Portrugal sent out fleets to find out something aswell, they came across Australia, and we have proof of this. the portrageese maped up untill about Queensland. Then they thought that they would go into Spains land so they didnt go any further. One ship, shipwreked and the crew made it ashore (This bit is only based on a picture they found in a cave in the Nothern Teratory they looks like and has the fetures of a Welthy European.) so it couldnt have been them. The Dutch had trading routes, and they came down past south africa and they found strong winds and they used them to get to Indonesia's spice islands. But one time they got knocked of their route and bumped into Australia and they maped most of Western australia and most of South Australia. There where 2 ships (which has been confirmed) and one sunk, the other made it back with a map. the map had a town on it and it was in dutch, it is still called it now and it is called Pt D'Entrecasteaux. But they ran out of supplies and where forced to go back. By this time England found out and they went aloing, claimed it as theirs and civilised it. But nobody thinks about the acctual meaning of "who discovered". i think it was the Native Australians (Aborigionals). they where there tens of thousands of years before anyon else.
Thank you and please reply soon,
P.S. i appolagise for my increadibly bad spelling!
Jacob

Wow Jacob - I never knew any of that.
Just goes to show ... I ought to know more about Australia.

Did find this - http://www.cultureandrecreation.gov.au/art...tralianhistory/
and this - http://gutenberg.net...-discovery.html
but assume you're aware of them anyway.

I've put a request on the History Teachers' Forum asking if there is anyone who will be able to help you.

My brother who teaches this in Australia reckons that this site is pretty reliable.

I think the answer is that nobody can say for sure.
But what I find amazing is the wide range of dates proposed.
If you google "Aborigines first arrived" you get a amazing range of dates.

It looks as though the date suggested depends to a certain extent on the criteria for the guess!

Ice Age-related explanation: http://www.orac.net....y/aborigin.html - a nice, straightforward site.

Rock Art-related: http://www.aborigina...art/rockage.php

And this is an interesting take on things - with very little evidence, mind, it seemed to me! - Climate Change-related:http://www.npr.org/t...storyId=1140067

Earliest: http://www.discovers...aboriginal.html

Later: http://en.wikipedia....ralians#History

This didn;t tell me when they first arrived in Australia, but I found it absolutely fascinating: http://en.wikipedia....original_tribes

Some teachers like you to summarise in your introduction what your essay is going to say.
I always used to tell my pupils to ignore the introduction altogether and just go ploughing straight into the essay!

If I were doing this essay and I was feeling the need to be a bit 'flowery', I would start with a short description of Captain Cook 'discovering' Australia, going ashore, planting the flag etc. -- and then finish the paragraph with the single sentence: 'But did Captain Cook discover Australia?

If you are look for materials on who discovered Australia, if you simply google
Who discovered Australia
you get some pretty helpful stuff, especially wikipedia and olga's blog.

I live in AUstralia, although there isnt a huge amount of education about aboriginal origins here but i did a couple of terms on it. The general opinion for the question about where aboriginals first reached Australia is that tens of thousnands of years ago (sorry a bit vague) there was land joining Australia and indonesia, and possible more connecting this to greater asia. It is generally considered that the reached Australia this way. Hope this helps.
