Medicine came on in leaps and bounds during the First World War.

Things like:

Blood Transfusion
Amputations
Skin grafts / facial reconstructions
Artificial limbs

These were all developed as the war dragged on. There was also a lot of work done on mental health during the war - treatment of shell shock etc.
