I am studying irish history from 1900-25 and am finding it really difficult to find a text book/source that helps me to understand this course. the textbook i have by Russell Rees is difficult to read and I was wondering if there were any other sources that could help me as im destined to fail!

The standard Irish historical textbook for the period 1850-1970s is _Ireland since the famine_ by F.S.L. Lyons. While not exactly 'light' reading, it does provide a detailed and concise account of your period (over about 150 pages). I'm sure there are other books but as a (school) student I found this the best.
You might also check the Irish Dept. of Education's History Syllabus for a nice framework, etc:

I would also agree with the Lyons suggestion.
I also liked Modern Ireland 1600 - 1972 by R F Foster - i thought possibly better than Lyons. With regards to the failures of the Liberal government, i liked The Last Years of Liberal England by KWW Aikin which covers the home rule period.
Also some of ATQ Stewart's work was good too.
