All candidates for teacher training need to have at least a grade C in English and maths GCSE, or can show that they have reached an equivalent standard. Candidates for primary teaching also need a grade C or equivalent in science.

There are many routes into teaching these days. Traditionally you would take your A Levels and then either a three year BA (Hons) degree in your subject (History) followed by a one year post graduate training course (PGCE) with QTS
OR a three/four year BA (Hons) Education with QTS OR three/four year B Ed. (Hons) with QTS. As a newly qualified teacher (NQT) in your first teaching post you complete this to obtain the final QTS qualified status.

It used to be the case that if you wanted to teach History in Secondary school at least 75% of your history degree had to match to the national curriculum topics taught and for primary history 50% of your degree.

At this early stage in your education you should choose the A Level subjects you enjoy studying to ensure you achieve the highest grades for your university place. For more information on teaching see this website: www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit/becomingateacher.aspx

good luck!
