It's really difficult to answer this, because I'm not sure what the question is!

There seems to be a word missing - 'believe'?

And, in what sense are you speaking?
As the Year 1000 approached, lots of people began to be very religious, thinking that the world would end in 1000.
Or do you mean in the sense of 'what did they know' about the world?
