The Roaring 20s is the term given to the 1920s. The First World War was from 1914-1918 (1917-1918 in the USA). This war saw death and destruction on a far greater scale than had ever been seen before.

The Roaring 20s is seen by many as the response to this. When the awful truth of the First World War became known, some people felt it was best to lead life to the full - make the best of the time that they had. The First World War was also known as the War to End all Wars. The USA emerged as the world's most powerful nation after the war with huge economic growth and without crippling war debts like the major European powers.

The Roaring 20s was a time, originating in the USA, where American industry saw a massive boom in the development of consumer goods - new inventions such as the motor car, radios and cookers. Everyone wanted these. Advertising created a demand and higher wages together with easier ways of getting loans meant more and more people thought they could afford such goods. Alcohol was banned in 1919, but it was very easy to get alcoholic drinks as 'speakeasies' developed (illegal bars). New music styles and lifestyle developed. Some individuals undertook death-defying stunts and others wore daringly fashionable clothing.

It is extremely easy to find materials on the internet. Doing a search for 'Roaring Twenties' results in a whole series of sites appearing.

This has to be one of my favourite history wesites:

The Lawless Decade 1920s
It has a year by year account of what happened in the 1920s and music from the era playing in the background...enjoy

This site also has information on 1920s....www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAevents2.htm
