We get asked this a lot.
If you do a forum search on
+stalemate +trenches
you will see what we have said in the past.

If that doesn't help, get back to us.

I am doing the coursework question on "Why did a Stalemate develop on the Western Front?".

So far, I've done the introduction, the bit about the failure of the Schlieffen plan, the Battle of the Marne, and the race to the sea.
I'm a bit stuck on the bit about the nature of trench warfare - how did it lead to the stalemate? So far I've written that it was a defensive system (barbed wire, zig-zagged trenches, machine guns etc) and that this made it very hard for either side to make an advance (going over the top was fatal), (these are not my exact words, because my essay draft is at school and I only have my notes on me) but is this enough detail? I'm just a bit confused on what I need to put in this paragraph and how to structure it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Remember that we are very limited in how much help that we can give, according to the coursework guidelines. I would suggest that you print out this reply and attach it to the notes/sources which you presumably keep with your coursework. You should also make a reference to it in any bibliography or list of sources. Sorry to sound so serious, but I don't want you to lose marks.

A stalemate is a position in a war, or a game, e.g. chess, where neither side can win. So, the question is basically asking, 'What had happened during the war so that, by the end of 1915, neither side could win on the Western Front?'

That should be enough to get you started. Good luck.
