Please may you help me!

I am really stuck! Im in year 9 and i have to wright a essay about the long term and short to term causes of world war one, i need to link these cause to nationalism,imperialism,militarism and alliances.
I would be very greatful if you helped me out. Thank you

MAIN reasons for WW1

Militarism - build up of armed forces - armies grew in size. Britain and Germany were rivals over dreadnought battleships which increased tensions between the two countries.

Alliances - Two camps - Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) Versus Triple Entente (France, Russia, Great Britain) Over crises in Balkans and Morocco and later after the assassination led countries to end up in stand offs. Which created tensions and rivalries.

Imperialism - countries empire building - Austria-Hungary in the Balkans (Bosnia 1908-09) France/Germany over Morocco in 1905-06 and 1911. This created tensions and rivalries.

Nationalism - all countries thought they were the best - and they believed in nineteenth century idea of Social Darwinism (strongest country, survival of the fittest)


It would take a spark to set off the war (now look below and try and see how the alliances between the countries led to the war)


That spark was 28th June 1914 when the Austrian heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.
July Crisis - Austria-Hungary was given unconditional support from Germany - and so (23 July) Aus-Hun sent a ultimatum to Serbia. Aus-Hun blamed Serbia for the assassination of FFerdinand in Bosnia...(Serbia did not like Aus-Hun for annexing/taking over Bosnia back in 1908-09) – Serbia agreed to 9 of the 10 demands in the ultimatum – (28 July) Aus-Hun declared war on Serbia - in the meantime Russia began to mobilise it's army for war. (Russia was a supporter/friend of Serbia) – Germany asked Russia to stop, but the don’t. Germany fears a war on two fronts (Western front against France and Eastern Front against Russia) and decides to implement war plan called the Schlieffen Plan a plan to knock out France then turn to fight France (to avoid a war on two fronts). They estimate this will take 6 weeks to achieve because they think it will take Russia this long to mobilise. The original Schlieffen Plan was to invade both Holland and Germany but General Moltke changed the plan to just invade Belgium. (1 Aug) Germany declares war on Russia. (3 Aug) Germany declares war on France. When Germany invaded Belgium (on 3 Aug) this violated the neutrality of Belgium which was protected by a Treaty of London and so (4 Aug) Britain declared war on Germany. Then (5 Aug) Aus-Hun declared war on Russia.

hi i need help on imperialism aswell i have to write what roles it played and could it have been the main reason for the start of WW1? any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanx xx

With respect, it's silly to ask for help in one post, and then put abusive posts elsewhere on the forum - did you not realise that the same person would be moderating both posts. Telling him to 'get a life' merely encourages him to delete your post and go and watch the TV, rather than spend time tryingto help you, doesn't it?


There is a little here, and on this spidergram. Marxists believe that imperialism caused the war.

However, if your essay is about whether it was the MAIN reason for the war, don't forget that you need to mention the other causes (alliances, militarism, nationalism, the actions of politicians such as Wilhelm etc.)

and donlt forget that many historians believe that imperialism DELAYED war, because - instead of confronting each other in Europe - the great powers were able to go off and conquer land in Africa. In fact, it was when all Africa was conquered that the powers turned back to squabbling about Europe, and the war broke out.
