Where neither side can win.

Stalemate in chess is where one player can't move without losing, but the other player can't checkmate him to win.

Stalemate in the First World War was where the two sides faced each other across No Man's Land. Both sides could stop the other side breaking through their trenches, but neither side could break through their opponent's trenches.
