Hello, I was wondering if someone could help please me with this question.
What caused the role reversal between Republicans & Democrats on the civil rights issue in the 19th/20th centuries (ie Republicans became increasingly anti-civil rights, Democrats increasingly pro-)?

To be honest, I haven't a clue!

One of the teachers on the HTDF suggests this webpage, but I'm sure you'll need more.
A couple of interesting articles here and here, although politically very biased.
It strikes me as essential also that you read this.
But as to why their roles reversed - really haven't a clue!
