Good day,

I have to work on a powerpoint presentation on the Spanish Civil War but was never thought on it in class.

I read up on Wikipedia very briefly and know it is a war between the republicans and nationalists. But what is it about the Catholic Church, anarchy and Franco?

Does the Spanish Civil War have anything to do with Collective Security in the League of Nations and the Great Depression?

I have no background what-so-ever on this topic.

Do you have any resources on the Spanish Civil War that is neat, simple and straightforward rather than one that is essay based?

Thank you very much.

To tell you the truth, I am weak myself on this topic.
All I can do is to offer you the same advice that I gave another forum member on this topic. As you aver, what makes the topic especially difficult is all the different elements which (chose to) get themselves involved, and it is wise to build up your understanding in ever widening circles, slowly adding groups such as the Catholic Church/anarchists into the overall picture.

The Spanish Civil War is a much underrated topic. It ought in my opinion to be included at GCSE as one of the 'steps on the road to WWII' - I am certain that people living in the 1930s thought of it as such, because they appreciated it as just one more way/area in which fascim was 'winning'. It also gave Hitler and Mussolini a chance to battle-test their armies, and it demonstrated the weakness/pusillaniminity of the western democracies.

...and the Great Depression?
I cannot think of any link between the Spanish Civil War and the Great Depression - perhaps young men blocked at home found adventure and a 'meaning to their life' in fighting for the Republican cause.
