Hi!
I've got an assessment to do about the English Civil War. We've got to write about how Peasants, Townspeople, Traders, and Country Noblemen lived during it.
The thing is, I've searched the internet for HOURS and I can't find any information.
I've used the notes I've written in my book during class, but no matter how long I try to make it, it's only abotu 2/3 of a page, and I need it to be at least 1 1/2.
I'm doing it on the computer, and I can't make the font any bigger because it can't be any more than size 12.
I can't think of any more information (especially about Traders and Noblemen), so I really need some help.
Reply ASAP please! :)

As well as the website which Mr. Clare mentioned, there is also some information on the very useful Spartacus Schoolnet site: http://www.spartacus...STUcivilwar.htm

This includes quotes from people who lived during the war.

Something to remember is that we can't make generalisations about what life would have been like. Some areas were fought over several times, e.g Newbury and Reading in Berkshire. Other areas saw no fighting at all, including London. If you were unlucky enough to live somewhere that was sacked (everything stolen or smashed by soldiers) such as Bolton, you could lose everything, including your life.

Noblemen, unlike many other people, could make a choice as to which side they fought on. If they ended up on the winning side then they could do very well out of the war. If they were Royalists, however, then they might well have to leave England and go into exile, losing all their property. However, they were still better off than many ordinary people who were made to fight, or forced to suffer.

If you are talking about Peasents and traders, you could mention, the bias sides of the Civil War. Parliamentarians went into farmers straw houses, attacked them, stole all their stuff, then forced them to either, support their side of the war, or join them as soldiers. Peasents and Farmers had no choice about this, and therefore had to join them, otherwise the soldiers just slaughtered them, and stole ALL of their resources, to keep people going and to make sure they starved.

Shrewsbury [ FTW ] played a little part in the War, thats where they came to discuss.
Hence why "The Prince Rupert Hotel" is situated in the heart of Shrewsbury.

Sorry, just wanted to explain about somewhere you probably won't even know about!

Hope this helps.
James.

You are quite right, this sort of thing did happen, but both sides did it, not just the Parliamentarians. For example, the Royalist nobility expected the men living on their lands to join their regiments when ordered. If they did not, then they could expect to be severely punished. As usual, ordinary people suffered in wars and often had little or no choice as to whether they took part or on whose side they fought.

By the way, your information on Shrewsbury was definitely worth including. How can pupils PEE if they don't have any examples? Furthermore, it is 'local history', finding out about where you live, and realising that long before we were around people lived where we do now. Well done to your teacher for helping you learn about it and to you for obviously valuing it and remembering it.

If you look on the yellow banner at the top of the page, click on the blue link 'Do try using the forum search'.
Then put what you are searching for into the box and hit the Return key.

You have to realise that it is a very primitive and temperamental search engine - it is not like google.
If you wanted to look for
Civil War Parliament

the first thing you would find is that it does NOT accept the word 'war' - it only accepts words of more than three letters (ie 4 letters plus)
SO
Civil Parliament

The next thing you have to realise is that this search will turn up not only every thread with both 'Civil' and 'Parliament' in it, it will turn up every thread with only 'Civil' and every thread with only 'Parliament'.
So to make it look for threads with the words both 'Civil' AND 'Parliament, you need to tell it to search for
+Civil +Parliament.

ie - in the simplest terms, do not enter words of three letters or less, and put a plus sign before each of the words you enter.

A pain - but that's how I found it.
