Do you know anywhere that could give me information on the following question:
why did the whitechapel murders attract so much attention in 1888?

Thank Youuu.

On the Ripper himself, try this page - http://www.greenfield.durham.sch.uk/H_HWK/...er%20Links.html - though some of the links no longer work.

What you need to do, as you read about the Ripper, to to think what elements of the case made it so interesting to the people of the time - things I would suggest are:
1. the goriness of the murders
2. the fact that the killer wasn't found
3. the fact that the Royal family were implicated
4. the fact that prostitutes (a forbidden fruit) were involved
5. the press interest

Can you think of any other factors as you study the story?

Hello again wink.gif hope everyone is having a nice Easter break
i was just wondering if anyone could help me find examples of social reformers using the jack the ripper murders as a weapon and for propaganda purposes (gaining more attention from the political side of things)?
and also wouldn't the Jewish community being blamed for the murders not only attract more attention from the Jewish community but also the government who i am gathering didn't want any religious upheaval?
thanks a bunch! (again) i am eternally grateful happy.gif

You need to read this article.
This article is also relevant.

There is an interesting thread on the Education Forum about the Jewish connection .
The established Jewish Community (those who had come to Britain in the years since Cromwell's time) was quite hostile to the new eastern European Jewish immigrants who came after 1881, because they were poor and the established Jewish community feared that they would trigger off antisemitism (which they did).
SO they would have been very hostile to the suggestion that a Jew was the Ripper.
