Hi

Im 15 and in Year 11, taking GCSE Modern World History. I took the subject, expecting, as I was good at KS3 History, that I would be good at GCSE History. I was predicted an A, and was fairly confident about the subject.

Then the problems started. The course is far harder than I ever expected, but, being predicted higly like I am, I struggled on, not telling anyone how difficult I was finding the subject.

Coursework started, and I got in the drafts in, though a tad later than I would have liked. When they were returned, my teacher said she had not recieved the "Why did the British Government decide to evacuate children in the Second World War?" piece of Coursework, though I had handed it in.

I have now gone to print off another copy for my teacher, and I have found that, after my computer crashed last month, half my files have disapeered. Most of my Coursework was fine, except this piece of Coursework.

Now, with problems with Coursework in other subjects, I became fairly behind in a lot of subjects, and each time I tried to fix the problem, I didnt spend time on the coursework set recently, and thus the problem has gotten worse. I have struggled on without asking for help, but now, with several pieces of coursework due in rapidly, I dont think I can hand in half of my coursework, especially if that involves having to write out a whole new essay for History.

All I am asking is, how do I tell my teacher I still need extra time, when it is this far into the course? I dont want to disappoint my teacher, but it is getting to the stage where I cant keep quiet anymore. Is there anything anyone can suggest, to either help me tell my teacher the problems I am having, or tips to getting the mound of Coursework I have to do done?

Please help

Don't panic! No point worrying!

Firstly: You need to tell you teacher what has happened to your PC and your coursework. You also need to let them know you feel you are struggling? Speak to a tutor or mentor! You need to organise your time.
Secondly: get your notes on this topic sorted from a file and start to write this coursework up!
Thirdly: think of all the reasons why the government evacuated the children...write a paragraph about each....you could have this coursework written in the next couple of nights! Stop worrying and put your energy into writing the coursework.

In future always back up files...or print extra copies.

Thanks.

Ive now finished that piece, after telling my parents the problem (It was a lot easier than I thought, as I had already written it once), and I am working on the final drafts for the second two.

My only problems now are that Ive been told to use all sources, and information on the sources, for the essays "Evacuation was a Great Success. Do you agree or disagree with this interpretation" and "Dunkirk was a great deliverence and a great disaster. Is there sufficient evidence in Sources A to F to support this interpretation", but I have lost the sources.

Does anybody have the sources for these pieces? I would be eternally grateful to anybody who can help

Thankyou

MWRY
Miss Buxton
Good....I'm pleased you have completed the first question.

I cannot help you with the actual sources to these two questions...as they are set by the exam board or your own school. You will have to speak to your teacher.

In the meantime....I suggest you look for information on how successful evacuation was and how it was not successful.....and look at the arguments surrounding Dunkirk......this will help you to add the detailed knowledge to the evaluation of the sources when you write the assignments up.
MrJohnDClare
Sorry - I was sure they'd turn up somewhere on the web, but haven't been able to find them.
You'll have to ask your teacher to resupply them tomorrow.

Thankyou for all the help and advice.

My teacher wasnt in school today, so I asked one of the other teachers for the sources, and now I have them all, and can hopefully finish these 2 essays today.

Finally accepting that I need help has seriously sorted all my (History) Coursework problems, and Im also hoping now that, with the boost doing these pieces has given me, I can make a serious dent in my (If I finish these 2 by this weekend) 11 Pieces of Coursework.

Thankyou all so much.

I am so glad that things seem to be sorting themselves out.

I have to say that most of the solution has come from YOU!
So well done.

Hi again

I finished those 2 bits of CW Last Wednesday, and got them both to my teacher on the Thursday. Im so happy now, because that means I only have to make alterations to the first of the 3 I completed since posting here and Ill have done all 5 Final Drafts.

Im still in problems with other Coursework, but nowhere near the amount now (5 bits of ICT Coursework, 1 bit of Chemistry, 1 bit of Physics, 1 Bit of Music). Other than that, Im done with Coursework, and that is mostly due to the help and advise that Miss Buxton and MrJohnDClare have given, so thankyou very much biggrin.gif

Thank you for saying Thank you! I'm really pleased that you have managed to sort out your history work! Use your time wisely to tackle your remaining subject coursework, you will soon get there!

I wish you luck with your coming exams and if you need any further help with GCSE history just post.

Once again well done! smile.gif

Hi again

I thought Id pop in to "add another chapter to the story" so to speak.

Over the past 2 months, I have completed all but 2 of the pieces of Coursework that I needed to do (2 IT), and have now hit exam period (I know its not good to still have outstanding coursework at this time. I really wish I hadnt, but getting this much done has been a relief). Im also EXTREMELY happy I finished the History Coursework when I did, because not long after my teacher made an announcement, and Im glad I am not one of the students that would be giving her a lot of stress anymore.

I have already had 1 out of my 2 Music exams, and my Physics exam, and this week have RE, Media Studies and the final Music exam.

Everything is going much more smoothly, and with History in particular, we had a Mock Exam for International Relations last week, and rather than being lost for words as I usually am with History exams, I wrote too much (For 1 question (parts a-d) I wrote 2 sheets of paper, and hadnt quite finished).

Now im just gonna have to find an "inbetween" for History, between writing barely anything, and writing too much. I hope I can do it, as this is the best Ive felt about History (And I am finally getting the enjoyment that I had at the beginning of Year 10 back for the subject).

I hope that both you Miss Buxton, and you Mr JohnDClare have been well over the past few months, and that there hasnt been too much hastle with coursework and exams for Year 11s (I can only imagine how the teachers are feeling at the moment).

Thankyou again for all the help

MWRY, a GCSE student who is hopefully now on the way to getting better grades than I would have done if I hadnt come here 2 months ago biggrin.gif

This is SUCH a lovely post to read, MWRY smile.gif
Congratulations - you seem to have really turned things around.

Do not panic now. Revise as hard as you can, then get your head together and go in and do your best.
That's all you can do, at the end of it all.

On timing the exam, there is some common sense advice here.
It amounts to working out befehand how long you have for each question, and then keeping looking at the clock in the exam to make sure you are keeping to schedule.

You have done this yourself by hard work and resolution, and you are to be praised.

Let us know how you get on!
Miss Buxton
Well done MWRY, this was down to all your hard work! smile.gif

As Mr Clare said....a lovely post to read at the end of a busy week.

Good luck with your exams!

Few final exam tips for paper 1:

Aim to spend 35 mins per whole question.....get hold of some past exam papers and time yourself at home.

on the d) 10 mark questions. DEAD easy to tackle them:
For each bullet point
D escribe - what happened
E xplain - why it happened
A ssess - what it led to/consequences..
D ecide - which bullet point/factor more important.

for 6 mark describe questions. describe at least two points with detailed knowledge

with source questions...........balanced answers.........what it tells you and does not tell you.....it is reliable because....it is not reliable because.......consider provenance...who wrote it? when? is the viewpoint one-sided? therefore you can/cannot trust it because.....what was the purpose the source was created? If you combine detailed knowledge and good source evaluation skills in these questions you will get top marks! If you do one with out the other then you will get 4 or 5 marks.

useful source questions: balanced answers.....this source is useful because....it is not useful because.....consider provenance...who wrote it? when? is the viewpoint one-sided? therefore useful/not useful because.....what was the purpose the source was created? If you combine detailed knowledge and good source evaluation skills in these questions you will get top marks! If you combine detailed knowledge and good source evaluation skills in these questions you will get top marks!

for interpretation d) question worth 8 marks (section b paper 1)
to get top marks......balanced answers.......Agree with source with detailed knowledge. AND disagree with detailed knowledge AND discuss provenance.....who wrote it? when? is the viewpoint one-sided? therefore you can/cannot trust it.....what was the purpose the source was created?

Hi once again.

Its 7am here, and in 2 hours, Im gonna be starting my final exam (Modern World History Paper 2 (Russia and Germany)), and after today, I will be finished at GCSE permenantly.

This may just be me being my usual paranoid, OCD-ridden self, but I must admit some of the exams did not go smoothly, but overall, I am more relieved that it is soon to be over (Even if I do end with the hardest exam).

On the first History paper, I cannot deny that I made a silly mistake. I first flipped to Question 4 on the Cold War section, thinking it was Question 3, and couldn't work out why there were only 2 Cold War questions (One of which was on Détente, which I am NOT strong at). I had a mini panic-attack in the exam, because I didnt think I would be able to do the Détente question, and that lasted for about 10 minutes (Eating into the time I had for the rest of the paper), before I finally realised I could flip back a page, finding my favourite question in the exam (On the formation of the Cold War)

Today's History paper I must admit I am more nervous about, as it is on Russia, which we coverred over a year ago, but I have been revising for the last week (since Thursday after my penultimate exam) and have been up since 5am to ensure that nothing escapes my brain when it comes to the crunch. Im hoping the Germany paper will be as smooth as the Mock also (In my mock, I got 28/30 in Germany, but 14/30 in Russia), but you never know, so I am now cramming for Germany aswell.

Finally, I must once again thank both Miss Buxton and MrJohnDClare. It is hard to realise just how much of a rutt I was in when I came here in March, and I seriously did not think that I could pass any subject, let alone History, which is one of the hardest I am taking (Only losing that position to Physics, ICT and Media Studies). The vast amount of help and support that you have both provided have been immensely influential in my current standings (I came here with 17 pieces of Coursework outstanding, with only 2 months to go, and I managed to get 15 of those pieces complete (I ran out of time for 2 of the ICT) with your help and guidance. So I must say, from the bottom of my heart, thankyou so much. August 21st has never seemed so daunting, but the fact that I have (almost) come through this alive and well, which is important, and I have you both to thank for that.

Once again, I say thankyou, and I hope that by the time the 21st of August comes, I will have made you both proud.

MWRY. A student (almost) complete with GCSE for good.
MrJohnDClare
Thank you for this delightful letter which we will treasure for a long time.

I suspect that we have done little in the overall scheme of things - you have done it yourself.
WHATEVER you get in August, you can be proud of yourself.

And as for us, it has been a joy working alongside so motivated and genuine a pupil, and I am sure Miss Buxton will join me in wishing you all the best for the future.

I predict that you are going to do very well in life - you are just 'the right stuff'!

Now - enjoy your freedom!!!!!!!

Miss Buxton
What a lovely letter! I do hope you survived the paper 2 exam this morning!

Well done you have worked very hard in the last few months and I wish you every success in your future!

Let us know how you do in August!

Enjoy the summer! smile.gif smile.gif

Hi again.

Its now 10 to 11am here, and im still digesting my GCSE results I picked up at half past 9 this morning. I recieved the following grades:

Mathematics : A
Statistics : A
English Language : A
English Literature : B
Biology : B
Chemistry : A*
Physics : B
Applied ICT : CD
Short Course RE : A
Music : C
Media Studies : C

Now, the most important one here of course:

Modern World History : A

I cant believe it myself, I was hoping for a B maximum, so an A is just astonishing for me.

I have both of you to thank for my grade in History, as well as a strong set of results across the board. Before I came to this website, I was not in a position where I could have even IMAGINED getting these grades, but was unable to ask for help due to my own stubborness and pride. The ability to use the internet as a place to find help in getting through the pressures of GCSE has been such a relief, and you have both been so supportive. I cannot thank you enough, either of you. You have been so helpful, and I am sure with teachers like you, your own students will have done you proud today.

Again, thank you so much for everything over the past 5 months - you have both been brilliant.

MWRY. 1 A*, 5 A's. 3 B's, 3 C's and 1 D
MrJohnDClare

All the best for the future, and have a little bit of a celebration!
Miss Buxton
Congratulations!
