GOOD question!

Answer - you decide!
Your end date, of course, is 1900.
Choose your own start date, depending on what you want to say.

Just make sur you start your essay by defining what dates you are going to take - your form of words can go: "... in the late 19th entury, which I take to mean the period 18?? to 1900."

If you're a bit short of info you can push it back to 1851.
If you've got lots to write about, you can cut it down by starting as late as 1890!

I would suggest 1875 or 1880 would be a sensible date.

hi,
I was wondering.. would it be appropriate to start from the year of----> 1828??

do u think it would be useful to explain the: *origins of the police force *the popularity of the police force *the organisation of the police force *the police work *the types of crime *statistics for the 19th centuary of crime *the work of detectives (CID) *the two roles of the police force

plz help!

this question is sooooo hard to determine what to say and how far in detail to go :S

There is no way that 1828 can be described as 'late' 19th century.

If you are going to start at that date, define your dates as 1875-1900, but start with a paragaroh which starts: 'Of course, it is impossible to describe law and order in 1875-1900 without knowing what went on before that...' But make it VERY brief.
Starting at 1828, with a title such as you have, is to be irrelevant, and it could actually LOSE you marks.
