Hi,

I'm doing my history coursework, about the Romanov family, and am in desperate need of help answering a "How far..." question.

What I really need to know is: HOW DO YOU CONCLUDE THEM????
I've nearly finished the question and am really wanting to get it finished...

Please help!

The answer to your question is: 'Therefore...'

A 'how far' question is a sophisticated variant of the 'do you agree question'.

Remember that you answer a 'do you agree' question in three sections:
1. Thesis: arguments/explanations which suggest that the claim is correct
2. Antithesis: arguments/explanations which suggest that the claim is NOT correct
3. Synthesis: a decision based on the arguments above and a new, 'telling' consideration.

A 'how far' question is exactly the same, except that the answer is not 'yes' or 'no', but will specify a 'degree of agreement'.
1. Thesis: arguments/explanations which suggest that the claim is correct
2. Antithesis: arguments/explanations which suggest that the claim is NOT correct
3. Synthesis: a decision based on the arguments above specifying whether there is a 'great degree' of similarity, or 'only a small degeree of similarity' or even 'a fair degree of difference'.

I am presuming that so far in your essay you have talked about the ways the documents as similar, and the ways in which they are different.
So now you should be set up to write that pivotal word: 'THEREFORE...' and use what you have said to asnwer the question: 'How far...'

PS what are you comparing?
Have you remembered to compare;
Content - what the sources say
Provenance - who wrote them, and when, and the authors' individual motivations
Purpose - WHY the sources were written

Is this Standard Grade?

If so, do you mean a "how far do the sources agree about ..." or "how far do the sources tell us about ..." There are separate ways of answering each and I have outline plans for each, including conclusions.

Could you tell us the actual question and whether it is SG or GCSE?

Hi, thanks for that Mr JDC,

Still not sure if it is Standard Grade cos the questions are almost always "How far do sources A/B agree / disagree about ..." but here goes the plan anyway:

"Sources A/B agree / disagree partially / to some extent / fully / not at all etc" (first make your judgement).

"They agree about ..... Source A says "..." and Source B says "..."" (say what they agree about (if anything), then quote from A then cool.gif

"However, they disagree about .... Source A says "..." and Source B says ... (or even, but Source B doesn't mention anything about it)"

"In conclusion, Sources A/B agree / disagree fully / partially /not at all etc." If you want to make your conclusion really good you can then develop this overall judgement e.g. "Source A is mainly for the Nazis whereas Source B is mainly against them"

If you just quote without making the first comment on what they agree / disagree ABOUT you have to give more points of comparison.

I've hurt my leg so this is me spending my Sat nights on history websites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am such a saddo sad.gif
