Mary Queen of Scots – guilty of treason

For ten years Elizabeth was doing nothing about marriage and her succession was in trouble. In the spring of 1568 Mary appeared in England seeking help.

Mary was no longer popular in Scotland after a series of arguments with Protestants and two unfortunate marriages.  This is a plan of what happened to Mary Queen of Scots husband Lord Darnley. (from the Public Record Office).  Many think she actually arranged his murder!

In 1570 the Duke of Norfolk was drawn into a plan to marry Mary and help her to gain the Throne.

English Catholics had to choose between their Queen or the Pope when he excommunicated Elizabeth.

In 1586 Mary Queen of Scots was found guilty of treason.  Elizabeth hesitated signing but still she was refusing to send the death warrant.

In February 1587, Mary was beheaded. Though Elizabeth tried to deny responsibility for putting her royal cousin to death.
