WHEN AND WHY DID RELIGION FIRST CAUSE A PROBLEM FOR THE TUDORS?
When Henry ‘s father died Henry his son was assigned to the throne. At this time the whole of England was catholic and so was Henry. Henry wanted a divorce but the Pope wouldn’t let him, he wanted a son so much that he changed the church to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. That was the beginning of Protestant religion and church in England and also known as the Henrician reformation.
Henry died in 1547 and his son Edward VI came to the throne. Edward was a very strong Protestant.
Mary, Henry’s first daughter became queen after Edward died. She was a very strong catholic. She changed the Pope to head of church again and made all church services in Latin again. All priests were separated from their wives and Persecution of Protestant.
In 1558 Mary died and Elizabeth then came to the throne. This was the beginning of the religious settlement. She changed the services back to English, allowed priests to marry, made a new prayer book and named herself governor of the church.
